Queen Victoria - Surface Printed

The introduction of perforating machines in 1854, was to change the evolution of stamp design. The printing of the embossed issues was slow and unsuitable for perforating, whilst the original recess-printing still presented problems as a result of paper stretch due to the moistening of the paper during printing. In relief or surface printing, the design is raised instead of being recessed into the plate or die. Only the raised portions of the plate receive ink and it is unnecessary for the paper to be moistened. Thomas De La Rue & Co. were awarded the contract for printing the new stamps.

1880 2d Very Deep Rose. Unmounted block of four. This stunningly deep shade comes from a well known sheet, examples of which have appeared over the years. They are all unmounted mint unhinged with full original gum, which is difficult enough to find on a single in the ordinary shade. Take a look a Gibbons site - they do not have one example for sale there (6/6/10). They are selling 5d Indigos at well over Catalogue Price - which proves the scarcity of this issue. There are the smallest of imperfections on the back if you want to be fussy, but just try to fine another. A stunning exhibition item.

1887 - 1902 "JUBILEE" STAMP ISSUE

These new stamps appeared on 1st January 1887, the same year the queen celebrated the 50th anniversary of her accession, so it was inevitable that they should become known as the Jubilee Issue. They were however not intended as commemoratives. They were in fact the result of the work of the 1884 Stamp Committee, appointed to remedy the problems arising from the confusion of values and colours, especially the universally disliked 'Lilacs and Greens' of 1883-84. These, with the Edward VII designs derived from them, are the most colourful British Definitives ever issued.
