1, used together on piece. Cancelled by superb upright red Maltese
crosses and with fabulous strike of a 'MORE TO PAY' below. Pencil
note says June 6th 1840 (I have seen this item in an old RL
catalogue when it was a much larger piece and this confirms the
date). Traces of staining around the stamps and 1d GL just touched
NW in no way detracting from this beautiful item. I know of only
three earlier (May Dates) 1d/2d combinations on cover, two of
which are on Mulreadies. Unusual to see 5d on a cover, presumably
an error by the sender and hence the 'More to Pay'. A stunning
exhibition item!
