Queen Victoria - Surface Printed

These new stamps appeared on 1st January 1887, the same year the queen celebrated the 50th anniversary of her accession, so it was inevitable that they should become known as the Jubilee Issue. They were however not intended as commemoratives. They were in fact the result of the work of the 1884 Stamp Committee, appointed to remedy the problems arising from the confusion of values and colours, especially the universally disliked 'Lilacs and Greens' of 1883-84. These, with the Edward VII designs derived from them, are the most colourful British Definitives ever issued.
