A very fine used example used on 24 MAY 1840, THE THIRD SUNDAY,
from Bristol to Lansdown and cancelled very fine vermilion cross
typical of the period with matching Bristol date stamp. Small
piece missing on flap as seen top right otherwise very fine and
rare. 1d blacks used on this date catalogue at £11,000. Spec:
ME1.

A very fine example cancelled by a superb strike of the LONDON No
"9" IN MALTESE CROSS. Dated 15.1.44 to Sydenham in Kent,
also contains the 'John Besemeres & Sons' ADVERTISEMENT

POSTAL HISTORY

Very fine letter on mourning paper in envelope, written and signed by the poet
"Alfred Lord Tennyson" to a Miss Catherine Marsh at Beckenham Rectory, near
London, a prolific novelist of the time, offering his condolences on the death of a
loved one. The letter was written from Tennyson's Farringford home in Freshwater on
the Isle of Wight. The letter is in superb condition, the envelope, cancelled by two
1d red stars, a little less so.

1857 1d Red on folded lettersheet to Midhurst, neatly cancelled by nearly full strike
of the Charles Rideout experimental machine no.1 cancel code HS on March 15 1858. 8
