Great Britain - Four Kings

Queen Victoria died on 21 January 1901 but it was almost a year, 1 January 1902 until the head of Victoria was replaced by the new monarch's head. The ½d value was replaced by a new design with the addition of a matching 1d stamp, replacing the 1d lilac that had been used since 1881. A 2½d value was added, but apart from that, all other values and designs remained the same until the change of colour of the 4d in 1909 and the addition of the 7d on 4 May in 1910, only 2 days before Edward’s death. On 31 December 1910, De La Rue’s contract for printing the stamps ran out and was put to out tender in an attempt to reduce costs. Harrison & Son, who had never printed postage stamps before, won the contract to print the single coloured stamps, while the bi-coloured stamps and the high values were printed at Somerset House.
