SG 8 - 1844 1d RED BROWN PLATE 39 "FIRST DAY COVER" 1844 CANCEL

A three margin 1d red tied to large folded letter sheet by Bath "53" 1844 type cancel on the 1st official day of use - 1st May 1844. Posted on 1st May - Bath forwarding on the reverse, it was "Missent to Chippenham" before finding it's way to Cheltenham on the 2nd May 1844. The letter was written on 1st May and is written twice inside, along with a page of correspondence. The writer was apparently unaware that if he had posted this the day before, it would have been cancelled by a Maltese Cross!

This is an extremely rare item of postal history and exhibition item.
