Welcome to our website here at Elstree Stamps. We have been GB dealers for over 20 years, and specialize in material from Queen Victoria. From Postal History, Line Engraved issues including the 1840 1d Black, 1840 2d Blue, 1841 1d Red, and 1841 2d Blue, to Embossed and Surface printed stamps, with a special interest and stock in the 1887 Jubilee issue.

Lightly cancelled by a red Maltese cross, 10 & 7 o'clock ray flaw,
NE of ONE joined. Spec AS5g.

A very fine/superb used 4 margin example showing good plate wear, extremely lightly cancelled by a red Maltese cross. Spec AS21.

A very fine used 4 margin example, lightly struck by a black Maltese cross,
leaving the profile clear. Variety "loop to P".

A very fine used 4 margin example tied to dated piece by a full red Maltese cross. 7 o'clock ray flaw, line under "K" slightly doubled. Spec AS15

1841 SG8 1d RED BROWN PLATE 72 RE-JOINED UNUSED BLOCK OF 6 MARGINAL INSCRIPTION.
It has been cut and re-joined vertically and is secured by hinges, but otherwise and very fresh block, with large part original gum.
Inscription in margin "PRICE 1d Per Label. 1/- Per Row of 12. 1.... Per S"
The lower pair, TB & TC are missing from the imprimatur sheet. It does have clear margins all round. A fine exhibition piece. SG Cat 3600.00 as singles.

1841 SG14 2d BLUE PLATE 4 DUPLEX CANCELLATION (MH)
A very fine used 4 margin example, neatly struck by a duplex cancellation,
rarely found on this issue as late used.

1855 SG34 2d BLUE PLATE 5 VERY FINE UNUSED (AD)
A very unused example, with just a smattering of gum on the back. From the short "A" row.
Scarce so fresh. SG Cat 2850.00.

1841 SG15 2d DEEP BLUE PLATE 3 VERY FINE USED STRIP OF 6 WITH VARIETIES (QG/QL)
A very fine used strip of 6 with margins all round, each struck by a neat Maltese cross. Part red cancellation.
Varieties on 3 stamps - QI - right frame line extends down, QJ - "J" flaw, QK shifted transfer, value and base.
An exhibition item - rare so fine as such long strip. SG Cat 1650.00 as singles.

1841 SG7 1d RED BROWN PLATE 2 VERY RARE BLOCK OF 4 (QE/RF)
A fine used block of 4, margins all round except for the base of RF which is cut into.
Each stamp showing 7 o'clock ray flaws.
Hinged on the back, with the shallowest of thinning on QF.
Despite it's faults, this is a very rare multiple and unpriced by
Gibbons as a block due to it's rarity.

1841 SG14 2d BLUE PLATE 3 SCARCE BLOCK OF 4 (CG/DH)
A fine used block of 4, margins clear around except for the SE corner of CH where it is only just touching, with a 3mm scissor cut through the base line. Blocks of 4 with Maltese crosses are very scarce. SG Cat 6000.00 as a block of 4.

   1900 SG213 1/2d Dull blue green unmounted mint lower right corner marginal vertical pair showing a dramatic pre-printing paper fold. From the vertical comb perforator with perforations in the right margin. A rare item.

 1887  SG201 21/2d Purple on Blue. A very fine unmounted mint example from the 1st setting from the top of the pane showing unusual printing void. Very unusual and probably unique. Ex. Gwaine Baillie Collection.

 1887 SG197 1/2d Vermilion Partially Imperforate. An unmounted mint example without perforations on 3 sides and an extra perforation hole on the perforated side. Only other similar example we have seen was in the Gwaine Baillie collection 2005. Most unusual.

 1887 SG197 1/2d Vermilion. An unmounted Mint marginal block of 4 showing gross error caused by paper fold while printing. Giving also the appearance of "extra wide" stamps and mis perf, this is a most unusual and probably unique item. Very rare.

 1887 SG197 1/2d Vermillion. A mounted mint corner marginal piece showing unusual paper fold. This only affects the perforations and not the printing. Corner was probably folded as sheet was being perforated. Unusual.

1887 SG197 1/2d Vermilion. A very fine unmounted mint control M pair, where the corner has been folded during printing. Also a double row of vertical perfs along the bottom. An unusual and scarce item.

1887 SG197 1/2d Vermilion. A fine mint control N block of 6, where the corner has been folded during printing and therefore perforating the margin. An unusual and scarce item, especially in a control block.

SG197 1887 1/2d Vermilion. Unmounted mint bottom left corner marginal block of four with a pre-printed paper fold, resulting in a portion of the S.W. stamp being printed on the gummed side. Hinged in margins only. A rare item.

1887 SG198 11/2d Purple & Green. A mint marginal example showing a large void of printing to the head plate, purple missing upper right. This does not affect the duty plate. Light crease, Large part original gum.

1887 SG198 11/2d Dull Purple and Green. A very fine mint bottom left corner marginal block of 6 from the 2nd setting, no green rule along bottom of pane. Top left stamp showing variety " deformed leaf". Duty plate 4, R19/1. Spec K29e. 5 stamps are unmounted mint, one mounted, mounted in margins. Very fresh with full perfs, a lovely positional block of this variety and very scarce. SG Cat 1100.00

1887 Jubilee SG209 9d Dull Purple and Bright Blue. A full unmounted mint pane of 20, pane "G" from the SW corner of the post office mill sheet - small watermark cross in SW corner.
From the 3rd marginal setting, blocks and pillars in margins and rules around pane, purple rule broken at corners. Part next panes above and to the right, very scarce as such.
4 of the stamps have a light vertical crease, otherwise a very fresh and scarce piece, especially in the bright blue shade. Spec K38(2) SG Cat 4400.00 as singles.

1884 SG179 2/6 Deep Lilac (LF/MG) Watermark Large Anchor. A superb used block of 4,
each perfectly cancelled by an upright CDS of Plymouth for September 26th 1891.

1855 SG62 4d CARMINE WATERMARK SMALL GARTER FINE USED SCARCE FRENCH CALAIS CDS.
 
A fine used example, on highly glazed blued paper, cancelled by a French Calais CDS for 19th March 1856. This cancellation is usually added to the front of the letter, when posted in England on it's way France,  and rarely placed on the stamp. Very scarce usage.   SG Cat 450.00

 A fine used wing margin example, lightly struck in Jamaica. A rare stamp.

A good used extremely nearly 4 clear margin example, only just about touching NE frame line. Nicely struck by a Market Drayton cancellation in Blue - recorded for 1847 & 1851 (Danzig) On thin paper. A scarce stamp but priced accordingly. SG Cat 1000.00

 A fine used pair, margins all clear on the left stamp, just touching at the top on the right. Watermark VR upright. A lovely purple shade, with a scarce cancellation.

Watermark Large Crown, Perf 16. A fine used example of this difficult stamp, struck by a scarce London Inland Office 21D - 3 -7- 7- 3 rarity "G" cancellation.

1887 JUBILEE SG200 2d GREEN & CARMINE 1890 GUILDHALL CANCELLATION ON COVER 
In 1890 - for the 50th anniversary of the postage stamp - the Penny Postage Jubilee exhibition was held at the Guildhall. 
You could post envelopes to yourself and get them cancelled by this special post office cancellation at the exhibition.

1878 cover from Portsmouth to The Cape of Good Hope, with 2 x SG141 21/d Rosy Mauve plate 10 and a 1d Red making the 5d overseas rate.
Cancelled by 5 strikes, one on the reverse, of the scarce Portsmouth Sorting Carriage CDS for April 17th 1878.
Signed by Henry Ponsonby from Osborne this envelope with a black seal on the reverse, possibly Royal Arms.
To His Excellency the Right Hon. Sir Bartle Frere GCB GCSI - The High commissioner of South Africa.
A very similar cover from Ponsonby to Kent sold recently sold at a London auction. Exhibition quality. (Argyll Etkin Feb 2017 item 905)

A good used 4 margin example, tied to piece by a double strike of the rare Whitehaven Maltese Cross.
The adhesive is slightly damaged above "E" of POSTAGE. Spec BS3tv. SG Cat 2200.00

 1840 SG3 1d GREY BLACK PLATE 1a SCARCE BLACK MALTESE CROSS ON PART COVER (RJ) 
A fine used 4 margin example, tied to front plus part flap by a Black Maltese cross, scarce on this plate. 
Town stamp "Cross" on the back for June 7th 1841 - possibly a small village in Somerset to London.
10 & 5 o'clock ray flaws. Good plate wear.  Spec AS2. SG Cat 1100.00 of cover.

A very fine used block of 4 with good margins all round. Cancelled by black Maltese crosses and rare so fine. JJ showing variety "double J". Spec ES11.

 1878 SG129 1 BROWN LILAC SCOTTISH ABERDEEN CDS SUPERB USED RPS CERT (DH) 

Watermark Maltese Cross. A superb used example, cancelled by a steel CDS of Aberdeen for 22nd January 1882.

Lovely colour, well centered, and very fresh with RPS certificate. SG Cat 4500.00 ++

VERY RARE FULL PANE OF 20 FROM THE FIRST MARGINAL SETTING
1887 Jubilee SG205s 4d Green and Brown overprinted Specimen type 9.
All stamps are unmounted mint, 4 rows affected by light vertical creases, and hinges in the margins securing perfs.
In over 25 years, this is only the 2nd full pane from the 1st marginal setting, without rules or pillars in the margins we have seen.
Pane C/G from the left side of the Post office millsheet. Wiseman rarity L-M.
The other was in the Aureum collection, recently sold by Gibbons for 2500 - sold before the catalogue went to print and marked in it as such.

1887 Jubilee SG197 1/2d Vermilion. Watermark Crown inverted. A very fine used example with Watermark Inverted, neatly struck by a Windsor squared circle cancellation. Although now priced by Gibbons, these are extremely rare. We have seen no more than 3 or 4 in over 25 years and very rare so fine.

1887 Jubilee SG197 1/2d Vermilion. A very lightly mounted on the back, mint example of this scarce stamp, with inverted watermark, printed on the gummed side. Spec K27d. SG Cat 4000.00

1887 Jubilee SG197 1/2d Vermilion. A very fine unmounted mint block of 4 showing a plate cut under stamp 1 row 12. Small watermark cross in the corner positions this piece from the SW corner of the 480 stamp post office mill sheet.

11887 Jubilee SG197 1/2d Vermilion. A fine  mint interpanneau block of 8 spanning 2 panes of 120 stamps, unfolded in the central gutter. Watermark letter "E" visible in the left margin, showing this piece was from the right half of the 480 stamp post office mill sheet. 7 of the 8 he stamps are unmounted mint, one has a small bend. A scarce positional piece.

 1887 JUBILEE SG200 2d GREY GREEN & CARMINE VERY RARE SECOND SETTING CORNER MARGINAL
A very lightly mounted mint example, with full original gum, from the very rare 2nd marginal setting with two continuous rules in green and carmine in the margin. The 1st setting has no rules, and the 3rd setting continuous green but broken carmine rules. 
In over 25 years of collecting marginal pieces of the Jubilee issue, we have seen only around 8 examples of this very rare setting, and only 2 of them from the corner.

 1887 JUBILEE SG204 3d PURPLE ON ORANGE PAPER MINT BLOCK OF 4 EX. HAROLD FISHER

A rare block of 4 from the famous Harold fisher collection, sold by Phillips in 1983
 - over 30 years ago for just under 1000.00. Extremely lightly mounted if at all, the bottom right stamp has a small mark of adhesion, the others less. The top of the NE stamp
is slightly "oily". On the "orange" paper, these are extremely rare in multiples,
and this one may possibly now be unique. Spec K32(3)

1870 SG48 1/2d Rose Red (SX) Plate 13. A very fine mint example, appears to have never been hinged with original gum, showing the imperforated margin on the right to the edge of the sheet.
Lovely fresh deep shade and a scarce positional piece.

 1857 C9(4) 1d VERY PALE ROSE PAIR IRISH MULLINGAR SPOON CANCEL SUPERB (SC/SD)  Watermark Large crown, Perf 14, Die II, Alphabet III, Yellowish to Cream paper. A superb pair tied to small piece by a scarce Mullingar spoon. Very pretty.
